This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and manage a seafood product recall. It includes the ability to determine sources of problems, report non-conformance, take decisions to implement a recall, communicate to stakeholders and conduct post-recall reviews.

The unit applies to individuals who manage the processes involved in accepting and disposing of recalled seafood product that are found to be an unacceptable risk.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment Tasks

Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Monitor information and inputs from production, regulators or customers to ensure conformance with specifications 
Analyse non-conformance and conduct risk assessment to determine source of problem and potential outcome 
Report non-conformance of a scale to warrant recall action to appropriate personnel or agencies 
Make decision to recall product in a timely manner 
Develop protocol for engaging the media during the recall and seek agreement between the relevant parties 
Develop protocol for acceptance of recalled product and seek agreement between the relevant parties 
Communicate to all personnel on the need and level of isolation of returned product 
Maintain accurate records of current stocks and returned product throughout recall period 
Store records according to third-party requirements 
Isolate returned product from current stocks, product or facilities in a manner consistent with the level of recall 
Implement disposal or destruction processes according to third-party procedures 
Initiate review encompassing all aspects of recall 
Prepare comprehensive report identifying source of problem 
Develop recommendations to prevent re-occurrence and forward to appropriate personnel or agencies
