Elements and Performance Criteria
- Carry out pre-start checks
- Checks of water, power, fuel and lubricants ensure that all are available and the control system is operational
- Pumps are primed, if necessary, and valves and controls are open or closed as directed
- Pressure and flow testing equipment are calibrated and available as required
- Regular maintenance is carried out
- Other pre-start system checks are carried out in accordance with manufacturer’s requirements and enterprise procedures
- Inspect and operate the system
- Start up sequence is implemented in accordance with operations manual
- Emitter spacing is checked against the irrigation plan
- The transport mechanism is monitored and serviced
- The irrigation controller is checked for programming and efficiency
- All malfunctions, leaks and blockages are corrected or repaired immediately and reported in accordance with enterprise procedures
- Monitor the irrigation operation
- The irrigation schedule is applied and soil profile monitored for wetting
- Sprinkler performance is measured using catch cans
- Flow rates are measured using containers of known volume
- Operating pressures are measured using pressure gauges
- The irrigated area is checked for wheel ruts and other signs of waterlogging
- Shut down the system in response to irrigation indicators
- Water is applied for sufficient time to achieve required soil moisture levels in accordance with irrigation schedule, environmental considerations and allowing for weather conditions
- System components are shut down and drained in sequence in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and enterprise procedures
- Drainage and treatment systems are checked in accordance with enterprise procedures
- Irrigation activities are recorded and reported in accordance with regulatory requirements and enterprise procedures
