- Plan for collection of samples
- Confirm the purpose and scope of sample collection activity from discussion with supervisor or work instructions
- Confirm the sample collection schedule with supervisor
- Confirm the sampling site location and gain approval for site access where required
- Identify the samples to be collected and preserved with supervisor
- Assess the range of likely operating conditions, hazards and difficult or sensitive environments for impact on sampling and testing
- Prepare equipment and resources
- Source equipment required for sampling and preserving as outlined in sampling procedures
- Check equipment for availability and serviceability
- Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment
- Collect data or record sheets or books for use
- Move equipment, data sheets and personnel to sampling sites and prepare for use
- Apply safe work practices at all times
- Carry out sampling and preserving procedures
- Collect samples as outlined in sampling plan
- Preserve and record samples
- Prepare and package samples for external analysis in line with laboratory standards and send to laboratory
- Package and transport hazardous materials appropriately
- Make observations including information on the surrounding area and environmental conditions
- Report and deliver collection outcomes including presentation of samples
- Complete sample collection activities
