Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare work
   • The location and scope of work are identified
   • Materials required to complete the work are confirmed and available
   • Equipment status is confirmed
   • Personal protective equipment is selected, correctly fitted and used
   • Safety procedures are followed to confirm that work is clearly signed and relevant authorities are advised that work is in progress
   • Site is inspected prior to commencing work to identify and remove potential hazards
2. Set out base and run pre-ballast
   • Base/foundation is set out from off-set pegs to centre line and width for ballast according to track design and specifications
   • Pre-ballast is applied evenly to meet specified thickness
   • Pre-ballast is compacted to meet specifications
3. Complete work
   • The construction area is cleared of debris
   • Unused materials are stored as required
   • Tools, plant and equipment is cleaned and stored as required

Required knowledge includes

Knowledge of relevant state OHS legislation standards and codes of practice relating to work responsibilities understanding of the steps involved in constructingrepairing track functions and basic operating principles of preballast laying equipment the impact of the preballast base on related track laying operations the quality requirements of the foundation including the materials used thickness and compactness of foundation common problems related to laying preballast and corrective action required traffic control signage communication and procedures safe work procedures including awareness of health and safety hazards related to preballast laying and associated control measures and safe manual handling procedures purpose and limitations of protective clothing and equipment environmental issues and controls requirements to liaiseadvise related work areas housekeeping standards for the work area reporting and recording systems
