Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Check equipment
   • Pre-use check of safety and potential effectiveness of equipment is undertaken, in accordance with operating procedures, industry standards and regulatory requirements
   • Minor equipment faults are diagnosed and repairs are carried out, in accordance with organisational procedures and manufacturers' guidelines
   • Equipment faults and defects are reported and/or recorded, in accordance with organisational procedures
2. Assess casualty and develop management plan
   • Assessment of casualty is undertaken including vital signs, details of incident, medical and/or casualty history, physical appearance and other signs and symptoms
3. Management plan is developed taking into account available equipment, condition of patient and specific conditions
4. Casualty is assisted to a comfortable position suitable for implementation of management plan, where possible
5. Casualty is encouraged and reassured, as required, to aid in the facilitation of effective treatment
6. Medical aid is arranged as soon as possible, consistent with maintaining casualty safety
   • Pre-use check of safety and potential effectiveness of equipment is undertaken, in accordance with operating procedures, industry standards and regulatory requirements
7. Minor equipment faults are diagnosed and repairs are carried out, in accordance with organisational procedures and manufacturers' guidelines
8. Equipment faults and defects are reported and/or recorded, in accordance with organisational procedures
9. Maintain unobstructed airway
   • Airway is cleared and maintained using non-intervention techniques, where possible
10. Steps are taken to reduce risk to self or others of contamination from the casualty's body fluids
11. Suction apparatus is safely inserted into pharynx and suction initiated using approved techniques to avoid injuring casualty
12. Resuscitate casualtyand use oxygen
    • Face masks and other barriers are used, in accordance with organisational procedures and industry standards
13. Oxygen therapy is used in the ventilation of casualty
14. Recover and restore equipment
    • Equipment is cleaned, discarded or disinfected, restocked and/or replenished and stored safely, in accordance with organisational procedures
15. Report is forwarded to appropriate personnel, in accordance with organisational procedures
