Elements and Performance Criteria
- Prepare forconfined spacerescue operation
- Operation and task information is obtained from a variety of sources and analysed, and team roles are confirmed
- Appropriate rescue equipment is identified and selected based on incident information as directed by supervisor
- Personal protective equipment is selected relevant to the nature of the confined space rescue operation
- Any further details of the nature of the rescue are received en route
- Anticipated hazards and associated risks are discussed with rescue team members whilst on route
- Assess and manage confined space/trench rescue
- Confined space is assessed, hazards and risks are identified, and appropriate control and ongoing monitoring processes are put in place
- Physical features of confined space rescue scene are assessed before deploying rescue resources
- Rescue is managed to control access and to maintain a safe and effective operational environment
- Situational and environmental hazards are assessed, minimised and controlled
- Communication with other personnel on site is established and maintained
- Determine location and condition of casualties
- Assessment of incident scene is undertaken to determine possible location of casualties
- Appropriate equipment is used to assist in the location of casualties
- Evidence of location of casualties within confined space is collected and reported
- Condition of casualties and nature of entrapment is ascertained where possible
- Hygiene procedures are applied in accordance with organisational procedures
- Gain entry to confined space
- Entry permit is located and relevant information is obtained if available
- Atmosphere is monitored in accordance with AS 2865-2009 Confined spaces
- Appropriate ventilation procedures are implemented, where required
- Appropriate respiratory protection is used in irrespirable atmospheres, where required
- Techniques and equipment are employed to access the casualty
- Located casualties are treated in consultation with medical personnel and in accordance with organisational policies
- Remove casualties
- Conclude rescue operations
