Elements and Performance Criteria
- Plan and prepare for basic rigging
- Access, interpret and apply rigging documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
- Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements before proceeding
- Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
- Develop a written preliminary rigging plan and site sketch considering essential information
- Check and confirm job feasibility and schedule with the client, the load designer and other relevant persons
- Confirm hazards associated with the use of cranes and other load moving equipment and identify and review measures to eliminate or control these hazards with appropriate parties
- Finalise and confirm rigging plan, including the scheduling of required resources
- Safety requirements are followed in accordance with safety plans and policies
- Identify and implement signage/barricading requirements
- Prepare rigging equipment
- Select and inspect resources, materials and equipment for compliance with job specifications and applicable Australian standards
- Inspect lifting equipment according to manufacturer’s specifications
- Label, reject and dispose of lifting equipment which is identified as inconsistent with manufacturer’s specifications
- Sling loads and slings, ensuring protection of the load and associated equipment
- Secure whole or part loads to prevent uncontrolled movement
- Attach and position slings, or parts of slings, to the load, ensuring safe movement
- Attach slings, or parts of slings, to hook while the hoist wire is vertical
- Attach tag lines to the load where specified
- Perform test lifts, ensuring safe and secure movement of the load where specified
- Move loads
- Calculate and confirm appropriate safe working loads and centre gravity using load charts and standard calculation rules prior to load moving
- Perform load moving in accordance with the plan, acceptable safe work practices
- Perform work safely at heights, within incomplete structures and/or in confined and enclosed spaces
- Connect lifting gear to load to Australian standards and manufacturer’s specifications
- Connect load to movement device using appropriate and certified equipment
- Ensure stability of the load by application of load movement procedure, temporary bracing and/or load support appropriate to the task
- Follow appropriate designers specifications during the placing and securing of the load
- Dismantle and remove/restore load shifting equipment
- Use standard communication signals are used in coordinating safe movement of the load
