Description This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to analyse and describe material by indexing and abstracting the content and format of materials to ensure the efficient retrieval of information by customers.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Learning Outcomes and Application This unit applies to individuals who possess significant technical skills and knowledge for the description of information materials in accordance with national and international standards. This work is carried out autonomously within established guidelines.

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate

evaluation of appropriateness of descriptions created by the candidate and adaptations to suit different types of information

oral or written questioning to assess knowledge of standards and tools.

Assessment Tasks
