Learning Outcomes and Application This unit covers the knowledge and application of electricity supply industry (ESI) safety rules and codes of practice for work on or near electrical apparatus. It includes the application of relevant state and territory safety rules, codes of practice and enterprise-based procedures and how they apply in the context of transmission, distribution or rail work functions. It encompasses responsibilities for health, safety and risk management processes at all operative levels and adherence to safety practices as part of the normal way of doing work.The application of the skills and knowledge described in this unit may require a licence/registration to practice in the workplace subject to regulations for undertaking of electrical work. Other conditions may apply under state and territory legislative and regulatory licencing requirements which must be confirmed prior to commencing this unit.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Prepare to apply ESI safety rules, codes of practice and procedures for work on or near electrical apparatus
  • Relevant safety rules, codes of practice and procedures are identified and obtained
       
Element: Hazards and risk control measures for specific work functions/areas are identified and obtained
       
Element: The requirement for access authority/work permits required for work are identified and obtained from appropriate personnel according to established procedures
       
Element: Safety systems and equipment for work are prepared and placed to minimise and control hazards in accordance with established procedures
       
Element: Carry out application of ESI safety rules, codes of practice and procedures for work on or near electrical apparatus
  • Workplace procedures and work instructions for controlling risk are followed
       
Element: Safety rules, codes of practice and workplace procedures for induction to a worksite, are followed
       
Element: Specific workplace systems and equipment isolation procedures are followed
       
Element: Restricted workplace areas are identified, including ingress and egress procedures
       
Element: Emergency procedures are identified, including assembly areas, and communication systems, including audible alarms and processes, according to established procedures
       
Element: Complete the application of ESI safety rules, codes of practice and procedures for work on or near electrical apparatus
  • Processes for completing work are applied, and access authority/work permits, where required, are completed in accordance with established procedures

Assessment Tasks
