Application
This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to store waste in a storage facility prior to its transport and further treatment or disposal. The unit covers assessing waste including volume and waste types, to identify an appropriate storage facility. The unit also covers using equipment to facilitate waste storage, and ensuring waste is appropriately stacked, contained, secured and covered to maintain quality and prevent contamination or spillage.
The unit supports those who work under limited supervision in a waste management team.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of endorsement.
Elements and Performance Criteria
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. Where bold italicised text is used, further information is detailed in the range of conditions.
1. | Prepare to store waste. | 1.1. | Waste storage requirements are identified and clarified with relevant personnel according to organisational and compliance requirements. |
1.2. | Hazards and risks are identified and managed or reported according to organisational and compliance requirements.
1.3. | Waste to be stored is assessed to identify an appropriate storage facility according to organisational and compliance requirements.
1.4. | Equipment including personal protective equipment (PPE) is selected, obtained and used to assist waste storage according to organisational and compliance requirements.

Evidence of Performance
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.
The person must also store waste in a storage facility for two different tasks.
While storing waste, the person must:
identify an appropriate waste storage facility based on an assessment of:
the amount and volume of waste
the types of waste to be stored
waste compatibilities
follow organisational procedures to work safely and comply with regulatory and legal requirements
select, obtain and operate equipment required to facilitate waste storage
identify waste types and waste characteristics
place correct identification signage on the waste storage facility
check the integrity of stored waste and identify, manage or report non-conformances, as specified in the range of conditions
contain, secure and cover stored waste
document the details of stored waste using organisational proformas.
Evidence of Knowledge
A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:
classifications of waste
compatibilities of waste types
key features of the waste management hierarchy
hazards and risks associated with stored waste including hazardous substances and dangerous goods
industry-accepted signalling techniques
organisational policies and procedures and regulatory and legal requirements relating to storing waste
procedures for containing segregated waste types
types, streams and characteristics of waste
waste non-conformances and contaminants
waste sorting techniques.
Assessment Conditions
The following must be present and available to learners during assessment activities:
equipment:
equipment required to facilitate waste storage, as specified by organisational requirements
personal protective equipment (PPE), as specified by organisational requirements
relationships with team members and supervisor:
working under limited supervision.
Timeframe:
as specified by organisational requirements.
Assessor requirements
As a minimum, assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) current at the time of assessment.
Foundation Skills
This section describes the language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills essential to performance in this unit but not explicit in the performance criteria.
Skill | Performance feature |
Oral communication skills to: | ask questions to clarify waste storage requirements with relevant personnel. |
Numeracy skills to: | measure and calculate waste volume related to available storage space. |
Reading skills to: | interpret signage. |
Writing skills to: | complete waste documents and proformas. |
Range Statement
This section specifies work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included. Bold italicised wording, if used in the performance criteria, is detailed below.
Waste storage requirements must include at least four of the following: | amount and type of waste to be stored environmental conditions that impact on storage requirements equipment requirements including PPE length and method of storage required storage facility security requirements signage requirements waste compatibilities. |
Relevant personnel | client colleague supervisor or team leader. |
Compliance requirements must include: | commonwealth, state and territory legislation relating to storing waste, including: environmental protection hazardous substances and dangerous goods industry codes work health and safety. |
