Application
This unit describes skills and knowledge required to safely manage a variety of specialised finishing processes in the context of independent creative practice.
It applies to individuals such as ceramicists, glass artists, sculptors, jewellers and others who use aesthetic and technical finishing options with hard materials in their practices.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENT | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Research options for finishing work | 1.1 Assess the potential of specialised finishing materials, tools and equipment 1.2 Research historical and contemporary trends to inform approach to specialised finishing 1.3 Compare the value of purchasing own tools and equipment against the potential benefits of constructing own tools and equipment 1.4 Experiment with the building of own tools and equipment where appropriate, 1.5 Investigate the specific safety issues |
2. Set up specialised finishing | 2.1 Review key requirements for setting up specialised finishing 2.2 Confirm or create appropriate conditions before starting specialised finishing 2.3 Identify potential safety issues and take action to address them |
3. Assess specialised finishing | 3.1 Determine the specialised finishing options for the work being made 3.2 Determine specific requirements for tools, equipment, materials and accessories 3.3 Research, adapt and use appropriate ideas and approaches with consideration of intellectual property requirements |
4. Apply specialised finishing techniques | 4.1 Carry out specialised finishing processes according to safety and design requirements 4.2 Identify and resolve technical problems in the specialised finishing 4.3 Make 4.4 Liaise with others on technical and creative aspects of specialised finishing, including collaboration on specific challenges 4.5 Document specialised finishing |
5. Evaluate quality of finished work | 5.1 Evaluate technical and aesthetic quality of finished objects 5.2 Review documentation and evaluation to inform future work |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
use information and exploration to identify finishing choices and determine finishing requirements
produce finished works that are technically sound and free from faults arising from the finishing process
use tools, materials and equipment independently and safely
document detailed work processes
review finishing processes and work quality.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
explain the impact of historical, contemporary and emerging trends in specialised finishing
describe properties of, and specifications for, different specialised finishing materials, tools, equipment and accessories
identify typical problems that occur in the specialised finishing process and how they may be resolved
explain how characteristics of different materials achieve different effects when finishing techniques are applied
list cost and supply parameters for specialised finishing materials, tools, equipment and accessories in the context of professional practice
identify sustainability issues associated with the materials, tools, equipment and accessories used in specialised finishing
outline intellectual property issues and legislation associated with the use of research or adapted concepts in creative work
discuss organisational and legislative work health and safety procedures required for specialised finishing activities.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:
relevant information about finishing processes, materials and equipment
a safe work space for specialised finishing processes.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
Foundation Skills
This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
Skill | Performance Criteria | Description |
Reading | 1.2, 1.5, 2.1, 3.3, 5.2 | Interprets relatively complex theoretical and technical information from a range of sources and determines how content applies to work practice Reviews specific information to inform future work practice |
Writing | 4.5 | Records detailed process information in a logical sequence using clear language and industry specific terminology |
Oral Communication | 4.4 | Articulates clearly using language appropriate to context and audience Uses active listening and questioning techniques to elicit and share information and confirm understanding |
Numeracy | 1.3, 3.2 | Performs basic calculations to compare purchase price with the value of making own tools and equipment, and to determine quantities of resources required |
Navigate the world of work | 1.5, 2.3, 3.3, 4.1 | Meets obligation to ensure safe practices are followed when using specialised finishing resources and techniques Considers the implication of intellectual property requirements when undertaking research and ideas development |
Interact with others | 4.4 | Seeks and shares information and ideas in collaborative relationships with other practitioners to inform own work |
Get the job done | 1,1, 1.4, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1-4.3, 5.1, 5.2 | Adopts a systematic approach to preparation and planning of tasks Makes a range of routine and analytical decisions to determine finishing resource requirements and techniques for the work Recognises the need to adjust processes and techniques to work safely, solve problems and achieve results with peer support and consultation Uses evaluation and review processes to inform future work |
