Application
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to coordinate the day-to-day management activities during the build phase, and coding of, an information and communications (ICT) system, according to the design specifications and project plan.
It applies to individuals in the software development area who are required to synchronise the coding activities of a new system.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
ELEMENT | PERFORMANCE CRITERIA |
Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Prepare the work | 1.1 Review the specifications and standards for the project 1.2 Review the project documentation for the development environment 1.3 Analyse, and confirm, that the development environment matches the project documentation and meets the standards 1.4 Select the development tools |
2. Coordinate the work | 2.1 Determine the work units based on the design 2.2 Delegate the work units to the appropriate developers 2.3 Brief the developers on standards, procedures, schedules and other requirements 2.4 Implement project management techniques to ensure that all tasks are completed on time, and according to standards, and the specification |
3. Coordinate the development environment | 3.1 Implement and test the changes to the development environment, and document the outcomes 3.2 Update the project documentation for the development environment |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
analyse and confirm that the development environment matches the project documentation, and meets standards
select the development tools
determine work units based on the design
delegate work units to appropriate developers
brief developers on standards, procedures, schedules and other requirements
implement project management techniques to ensure that tasks are completed on time, and according to requirements
implement and test changes to the development environment, and document the outcomes
update the project documentation for the development environment.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
identify the client business domain, to inform the system build
describe the client-server architecture
describe the current industry-accepted coding in a recognised language, including features and capabilities
summarise current industry-accepted database management system (DBMS) modelling techniques
identify and describe current industry-accepted hardware, and software products, including their general features and capabilities
describe the principles of contemporary databases development, and their application
describe the quality assurance practices required for the build phase of information and communications technology (ICT) systems.
Assessment Conditions
Gather evidence to demonstrate consistent performance in conditions that are safe and replicate the workplace. Noise levels, production flow, interruptions and time variances must be typical of those experienced in the programming and software development industry, and include access to the:
design specification
software requirement specifications
system requirements
technical specifications
version-control standards.
Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
Foundation Skills
This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
Skill | Performance Criteria | Description |
Reading | 1.1, 1.2 | Interprets, and critically analyses, complex texts and applies the appropriate strategies to construct meaning from specifications, standards and the development environment documentation |
Writing | 2.3, 3.1, 3.2 | Communicates complex relationships between ideas and information, matching the style of writing to the purpose and audience, and displays a knowledge of structure and layout, employing a broad vocabulary, grammatical structure and the conventions appropriate to text |
Oral communication | 2.3 | Demonstrates flexibility in spoken texts by choosing the appropriate structures and strategies in a range of contexts |
Interact with others | 2.2, 2.4 | Collaborates with others to achieve joint outcomes, playing an active role in facilitating effective group interaction, influencing direction, and taking a leadership role on occasion, when implementing project management techniques |
Get the work done | All | Sequences and schedules complex activities, monitors implementation and manages relevant communication Uses systematic, analytical processes in complex, non-routine situations, setting goals, gathering relevant information, and identifying, and evaluating options against the agreed criteria, and implementing and testing changes Uses analytical processes to decide on a course of action, establishing the criteria for deciding between options Demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of principles, concepts, language and practices associated with the digital world |
