Set up operate and maintain a glass processing line

Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to set up, test, adjust, troubleshoot and quality assure a range of glass and glazing processing plant and equipment. It may involve non-numerical control (NC) and/or computer numerically controlled (CNC) production machines and processes for semi-automatic or automatic operation. Troubleshooting involves using testing equipment to identify problems and take corrective action.

This unit applies to plant technicians who resolve potentially complex equipment problems, sometimes in consultation with technical advisers.

No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements

Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Identify plant set up requirements

1.1 Identify and correctly interpret specifications for glass processing to determine process application

1.2 Confirm and check plant machinery and ancillary equipment for safe and effective operation

1.3 Confirm quality requirements for each stage of the process

2. Set machines

2.1 Determine sequence of glass processing operations and set and program plant machinery in accordance with manufacturer instructions

2.2 Adjust plant machinery and programs to meet glass product specifications and operational requirements

2.3 Complete plant pre-start, startup and set up procedures in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures

2.4 Accurately complete workplace documentation

3. Trial program

3.1 Operate plant to process glass, observing all safety procedures

3.2 Check sample glass product for compliance with specifications

3.3 Accurately edit programs to change operational sequence, speed and tolerance requirements to ensure processing conforms to specification

4. Identify and rectify quality issues

4.1 Test quality of products produced and use results to determine if machines are operating to specification

4.2 Recognise signs of equipment or product degradation and impending failure

4.3 Examine maintenance records to ensure that plant machinery and equipment does not require simple maintenance

4.4 Access calibration records and test equipment to determine if plant is operating within calibration

4.5 Identify possible causes of substandard performance through testing and elimination techniques

4.6 Assess adjustments and corrections made based on testing

4.7 Check plant and equipment to ensure correct operation and accurately document results of rectification

5. Instruct machine operators

5.1 Clearly explain and demonstrate procedures for safe and effective plant operation to machine operator

5.2 Provide operator with the opportunity to practice and ask questions

5.3 Monitor operator for correct application of procedures and provide additional instruction where necessary
