Operate in a field communications and information systems environment

This unit covers the competency required to deploy, operate and maintain communications facilities in Area of Operations (AO).It includes the ability to work independently or as part of a team under direct and indirect supervision in an operational environment.This competency is required by Army Communications and Information Systems Operators.

Application

The application of this unit in the workplace - the environments, complexities and situations involved - will be written during Phase II of the Review of the PUA00 Public Safety Training Package.

This text will be useful for the purposes of job descriptions, recruitment advice or job analysis; where possible, it will not be too job specific to allow other industries to import it into other Training Packages, where feasible.

1. Prepare for deployment

1.1 Allocated equipment is set up prior to deployment in accordance with workplace instructions

1.2 Allocated equipment and stores are packed prior to deployment in accordance with workplace instructions

1.3 Unit and personal equipment is checked, in accordance with workplace instructions

2. Deploy

2.1 Equipment and personnel are transported to area of operations in accordance with workplace instructions

2.2 Facilities are established in the area of operations in accordance with the appropriate directives

2.3 Equipment and/or personnel are redeployed in accordance with appropriate directives

3. Conduct operations

3.1 Daily routine is conducted in accordance with workplace instructions

3.2 Communications facilities are maintained as per workplace instructions

4. Maintain operability

4.1 Non-technical inspections and cleaning of equipment are conducted in accordance with workplace instructions

4.2 Consumable stores are replenished

4.3 Equipment and stores are safeguarded against damage or loss

Assessment must confirm the ability to maintain communications facilities for the duration of an operation. The member is to be assessed individually or working as part of a team.

Context of assessment

Competency should be assessed in the workplace or in a simulated workplace environment.

Assessment in this unit of competency should focus on the individual's ability to:

demonstrate knowledge by recall in a narrow range of areas

demonstrate basic practical skills, such as use of relevant tools

perform a sequence of routine tasks given clear direction.
