Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to respond to a range of local emergencies and incidents. It includes implementing response plans, monitoring the situation, taking necessary precautionary measures, and supporting formal relief.

This unit applies to those working in site-based roles in the coal mining, metalliferous mining, drilling, extractive, and civil infrastructure environments.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between States, Territories, and industry sectors, and must be sourced from state jurisdictions prior to applying the unit.

1. Prepare to respond to local emergency or incident

1.1 Identify, clarify and confirm nature, scope and location of emergency or incident

1.2 Access, interpret and apply local emergency or incident documentation

1.3 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements

1.4 Assess emergency or incident, and determine appropriate course of action

1.5 Notify required internal and external personnel of emergency or incident according to workplace procedures

1.6 Identify hazards and environmental issues, assess risks, and implement control measures

1.7 Locate, select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for response activities

1.8 Implement required communication systems to be used throughout emergency or incident in line with workplace procedures

1.9 Communicate and coordinate activities with others prior to commencing response activity

1.10 Locate, obtain, and test emergency equipment

2. Respond to local emergency or incident

2.1 Coordinate and control response to emergency or incident, including evacuation procedures

2.2 Identify hazards and assess risks, and communicate with signs, signals or barriers

2.3 Select and use emergency equipment

2.4 Take local measures to reduce impact of emergency or incident

2.5 Assess physical and emotional conditions of endangered personnel, provide support, and administer initial first aid response

2.6 Monitor and assess scenario and conditions, and assess changes in circumstances

2.7 Communicate requests to emergency personnel for further assistance and/or evacuation

2.8 Control emergency or incident situation until formal relief is received

3. Support formal relief and debrief

3.1 Support formal relief until emergency or incident is resolved

3.2 Participate in emergency or incident debriefs

3.3 Complete and file documentation, and distribute according to workplace requirements
