Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

MSTAT5011 - Develop standard-size patterns from existing blocks for garments with advanced styling

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Determine pattern requirements

  1. Identify job requirements from design specifications and drawings
  2. Select and prepare required patternmaking tools, equipment and materials
  3. Liaise with stakeholders to confirm garment details, design features, fabric selection, intended purpose and target market.
  4. Evaluate information and record all design and advanced styling requirements
  5. Select appropriate block construction methods and techniques to create block for complex garments with advanced styling
  6. Select required blocks and check they are accurate and appropriate
  7. Make necessary adjustments to create pattern that matches design brief
  8. Document methods and formulas used
  9. Check pattern pieces, label and complete markings

Check and finalise patterns

  1. Test toile or garment segments for proportioning and fit
  2. Complete any pattern alterations and assess pattern meets fit and design requirements in consultation with stakeholders
  3. Finalise pattern and check it is accurate, complete and complies with design specifications
  4. Complete pattern specification, attach to patterns for storage and file appropriately
