1. Plan and prepare for hydraulic shovel operations

1.1 Access, interpret and apply hydraulic shovel documentation

1.2 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements

1.3 Identify hazards and environmental issues, assess the risks and implement control measures in line with workplace policies

1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities

1.5 Select required hydraulic shovel equipment and/or attachments

1.6 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fires, accidents and emergencies in line with workplace policies

1.7 Coordinate and communicate planned activities with others at the site prior to commencement of work activity

2. Operate hydraulic shovel in line with established requirements

2.1 Carry out prestart and start-up checks in line with workplace procedures

2.2 Identify faults or defects and rectify or report within scope of own responsibility and according to workplace procedures

2.3 Drive and operate shovel, with correct reach angle, and ensure optimum bucket load without overload or strain on shovel

2.4 Monitor and manage equipment performance using indicators and alarms

2.5 Monitor hazards and risks during operations, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment

3. Dig and load trucks to complete work activity

3.1 Position and set up shovel for safe, efficient digging/excavation

3.2 Determine and maintain depth of bench, ensure optimum use of bucket capacity

3.3 Set and monitor bucket penetration, and ensure optimum bucket load and to minimise overload or strain on shovel

3.4 Walk shovel and re-position for safe and efficient operation

3.5 Coordinate truck positioning to allow safe loading operation

3.6 Load material on truck, and ensure bucket clears side of truck and is not swung over truck cabin

3.7 Check material is placed in the centre of truck tray and does not exceed truck load limit according to manufacturers’ specifications

3.8 Re-position shovel, and ensure safety of other operations personnel, property and equipment

3.9 Keep floor clear and level and remove spillages

3.10 Park shovel in safe area, on flat, level ground at end of operation

3.11 Shut down, secure and carry out post operational inspection of equipment in line with workplace procedures

4. Conduct housekeeping activities

4.1 Clear work area and dispose or recycle materials according to workplace procedures

4.2 Manage and/or report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment

4.3 Complete and file or distribute documentation in a manner that complies with workplace practices
